Gold Mohur issued on 1841 by Madras mint is sold at a colourful price of INR 3, 50,000.

On this gold mohur queen Victoria’s bust is depicted on the obverse with continuous legend “Victoria Queen” and ‘s’ incised in truncation. All this is set within the toothed rim. The reverse features a standing lion facing left with palm tree in background and continuous legend above “EAST INDIA COMPANY”. Denomination in English and Persian “Yek ashrafi= One ashrafi” below ONE MOHUR.

A very nice original mint luster is still present in the coin with scratch marks in the field. With very sharp details of coin are still visible making this Gold Mohur is in Very Fine+ condition and it is extremely rare.

The Initial ’S’ on the truncation of the coin stands for J. T. Smith who was the Mint Master of Madras. The rarity of the ’S’ incuse mohur can be understood by its mintage figures. The regular continuous legend mohur struck between Bombay and Calcutta mints was 607,048 but madras mint was 32,276 which is even far lower in number than the King William Mohurs.
